Mesa 3D has reached the finish line for release 24.1

Open source graphics software Mesa 3D is nearing the release of the final version 24.1. Recently, the developers announced the third release candidate 24.1.0-rc3, which will be one of the last releases before the stable release.

Mesa is an open source implementation of the OpenGL, Vulkan, OpenGL ES and other graphics API specifications used in most Linux distributions and other UNIX-like operating systems. The new version 24.1 will bring numerous bug fixes, performance optimizations and functionality enhancements.

Release candidate 24.1.1.0-rc3 is already available for community testing. The developers encourage everyone to try out the new version and report any issues found to the Mesa project's GitLab bug tracking system. The deadline for identifying critical bugs that may result in additional rc versions is May 15, 2024.

24.1.0-rc3 includes more than 20 changes and fixes from Mesa developers around the world. Of particular note are improvements for Panfrost (Mali), Clover (AMD VEGA), ANV (Vulkan for Intel), Zink (OpenGL over Vulkan) and other drivers.

Android and Wayland build fixes, documentation updates, code cleanup and minor bug fixes are also present. Boris Brezillon, Christian Gmeiner, David Rosca, Eric Engestrom, Iván Briano, Karol Herbst, Lionel Landwerlin, Rohan Garg, Yusuf Khan were active contributors in this cycle.

Regular interim releases with bug fixes have long been the norm for the Mesa 3D project with its mature open source development model. The final release of version 24.1, which will consolidate all changes from the rc versions, is expected in the coming weeks and will continue to strengthen Mesa's position as one of the cornerstones of the open source Linux/UNIX graphics ecosystem.
